In a recent phone interview, Lee McCall, correspondent at Sarasota Herald Tribune, and Alfonso Abreu, Chief Foodie at EmpaCurious, exchanged banter about the opening of the Bistro and Market concept.
Here's the story:
Market lunch area and evening bistro
EmpaCurious, a popular carry-out and delivery company on Anna Maria Island has opened in Gulf Gate Village, offering both a market lunch area and evening bistro featuring artisanal Argentinean street food, plus global flavors from around the world.
Partners Chef Alfonso Abreu and pastry Chef Sylvia Noguera have transformed the former Vizen into an attractive grab-and-go deli/market on one side with limited seating for lunch and a stylish art deco bistro with stamped concrete floors and tapas bar adjacent, offering dinner, liquid spirits and some live entertainment.
The signature traditional Argentinean street food of mouthwatering empanadas are filled with an extensive choice of global flavors like Cuban, Indian, Asian and Brazilian. The menu, which changes regularly, offers tapas, soups, salads, platters and sweets. There might be classic Argentinean dishes, Cuban or Cajun-style entrees, picadillo, Persian lamb with apricots, to name a few, plus sweet plantains and gluten-free Brazilian cheese bread.
Among decidedly decadent desserts are pina colada cake, guava empanadas, dulce de leche and cheese flan. Beer, wine and fermented liquor cocktails are available as well as coffees, teas and kombucha.
“We love the name (EmpaCurious) because it speaks both to our passion for food and our big idea for culturally-inspired themes,” said the owners.
EmpaCurious, located at 6559 Gateway Avenue, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Tuesday through Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday until 10 p.m. The bistro may be reached by phoning 941-922-8300 or online at empacurious.com.
